Real Texas style bbq in Georgia?! Get out. It's true. This BBQ is money. Best brisket I've had this side of the Mississippi. It's tender moist and has TONS of Texas flavor. They slice it to order and offer you a choice between the flat or point. The sausage has great smoke and excellent snap. Its definitely worth getting a link. You'll smell like a pitmaster when you leave Moonies because this is a real BBQ restaurant.

We decided to try this place because of the reviews, and thank goodness we did! My husband and I are skittish about trying new restaurants, especially barbecue, because we are a bit picky about barbecue especially. But the moment we arrived we could smell the smoke and it gave us hope. We both ordered a rib plate with baked beans and we split a half pound of brisket. I also had the Brunswick stew. The ribs were huge and very meaty. Perfectly cooked with just the right amount of smoke. We had the Texas Red Sauce, which was sweet and spicy but not super thick. The baked beans were sweet and tasty, but nothing super special. Definitely good enough to order again, though. The Brunswick stew was decent, but I'm very picky about Brunswick stew so I didn't expect to be blown away by it. I probably won't order it again. The brisket was where Moonie's really shone for me. It was falling apart, super juicy and the flavor. Oh... My... God... I could eat it every single day and never, ever get tired of it! It didn't even need sauce, because it was crazy delicious on its own! It was very fatty, which might turn some people off, but I loved it. Despite the sides being only decent and nothing special, and despite the fact that they didn't have banana pudding on the menu, which we had been particularly looking forward to since we saw pictures of it on Yelp, the meat and sauce made this our favorite barbecue place by far! We will definitely be back! Oh, and the sweet tea was perfect! Sorry I didn't take pictures. I meant to, but the smell made me lose my mind and all I could have photographed would have been bones!

Very good Brisket reminded me of Texas. After my lunch I've got to recommend this to Big BBQ fans. The brisket was moist, sausage links just enough spice. Worth the drive up North.

I'm a fan of BBQ. I study it. I cook it. Doesn't mean I would be a good judge in a contest. I may judge incorrectly. But IMO some of the reviews are totally unfair to this place. I rated it for my taste which also may be unfair. There was nothing wrong with the food. I do agree that a true Texas BBQ would not be keeping their brisket warm on a steam table but I also don't think that affected the quality of the meat. Someone else commented correctly that in Texas the meat would be the star and the sides just okay. Here the sides are better than the meat and again that does not mean the meat isn't good. Overall this is a good place to eat. Just remember BBQ more than other food is a very personal thing.

I am basing my 5-stars on the quality of the food alone since it is perfected and I will add some concerns momentarily. The food is always excellent, the brisket is perfectly tender with the right amount of smokey flavor and the sides are always excellent depending on what you are in the mood for. A perfect spot to go for a quick lunch and short escape from work as the service is usually very prompt. I highly recommended a brisket plate. -Recently noted is why the person responsible for the meat scaling area is never up front ready to go, the young lady up front had to walk to the back to get someone and even then it took a couple minutes for someone to come, in which she apologized. This is not a first time occurrence as I frequent and work in the area. Is there new ownership or something because I never feel an owner or manager presence anymore?

First time here with family. My sister and her boyfriend had been there before, but I wanted to try it based on Yelp reviews. I had the brisket sandwich with a side of coleslaw and a drink. Everyone else had something different so that gave me a chance to try a little of everything. Everything I tried tasted awesome! We are from Chicago, but my sister lives here so we don't get much good barbecue back home. Not at least like in the South. Here are the things I tried: brisket - great, ribs - great, pulled pork - great, jalapeño sausage - great, coleslaw - great. No complaints on any of the food. We all had a very enjoyable meal with very friendly people working at the restaurant. We will definitely be back for more!

Best barbecue I have had so far, but then again the only places that I can compare it to is Shane's rib shack and Sonny's ( chain barbecue places). The place was really clean. The food was excellent. This will be my go to spot from here on when I am craving barbecue. The banana pudding was freaking awesome!!!

This place is truly 'smack your mama good', with its laser focus on excellence in the slow cooking arts. I mean, what's not to love about their melt in your mouth brisket, fall off the bone pork and succulent, moist turkey? All the meats here are some of the best BBQ I've ever had and I've hung out in places like Texas and North Carolina! The side dishes are exceptionally tasty as well. May I recommend you try the creamed corn, the mac and cheese or the baked beans. I've been here three times and I have found the employees consistently courteous, prompt and efficient. The restaurant is clean and serves as a cozy place to enjoy their delicious food. Make sure and check out the extensive hot sauce selection on the wall to the side of the cash register, surely there is a spicy concoction to suit anyone's tastes. What a joy to have a place like this so close to my home.

Great BBQ!! Loved the turkey and brisket. The mac & cheese had a good flavor but could've been a little creamier. Nice slaw. Wish they had a true sweet sauce and more rub on the ribs, but overall one of the best bbq spots in GA.

Solid BBQ. Not true TX BBQ. There seems to be a lot of hype surrounding Moonies being true TX BBQ. I went in with high expectations. They were not fully met. First visit was later in the evening about an hour before closing. They had to check to see if they still had ribs. Yes. A few left. Bad choice as they had been sitting in liquid being kept warm for who knows how long. Should not have been served. Brisket and turkey were decent and showed potential. I thought maybe we were getting towards the bottom of the barrel because it was the end of the day. Decided to try it again a week later at lunch time. Didn't get the ribs but had the brisket and turkey again. I found both to be pretty good but not real TX BBQ good. Really not even close. - They use cafeteria style stainless steel warmers for the meat. Seems like it continues to over-cook. In TX they stab the meat directly from the pit retaining its full smoke and flavor. - Their meat cutters do not know how to properly cut and trim BBQ. In TX the folks working the pit and cutting board are masters. - Their brisket (the true TX BBQ hallmark) seems to lack that smoky peppery bite even at the fatty burnt ends and edges. The center cuts taste more like roast beef. If you have experienced true TX brisket then you know what I mean. It's almost life changing. - Their Brunswick Stew reminded me of some chili concoction. Not bad but meh... Pig and Chick in the Atlanta area has the best stew I have ever had. - Their spicy sauce is very good. Almost a carbon copy of Rudy's in TX so the sauce may be true TX BBQ. But, as most Texans would tell you, you shouldn't need the sauce. - Their cuts of meat seem to be on the cheaper side. The moist (point) slab should not look like the lean (flat) slab. Makes me wonder if they are really smoking whole briskets. Or, back to the meat cutter issues?? Overall I applaud them for trying and would likely stop again if in the area and was starving. If it was truly true TX BBQ then I would be going out of my way to get back.

Genuine Texas BBQ in our little corner of the world. The Brisket is always moist and tender, seasoned and smoked to perfection. The sides are always spot on, you could close your eyes and point to anything on the menu and not be disappointed. Good selection of sauces!

This was a pleasant surprise. A coworker brought me here and I had modest expectations. It is a small, simple place. You order at the counter and get your food immediately, which is nice for lunch. The food is affordable as well. I ordered a combo plate with brisket and spicy sausage. For my sides I chose potato salad and cream corn. The cream corn was great. It had great flavor and good texture. The potato salad was tasty as well. The meats were both very good. The flavors of each alone were good. The sauces they offer add even more great flavor. I really liked the Texas Red sauce. This is a very good place for a quick lunch or a casual dinner. For the price it is hard to beat.

Finally a restaurant that last in this location. Moonies is a pay by the lbs or basket option. They have almost perfected the brisket and it can be addictive. I tend to get a brisket sandwich and put coleslaw on it with pickles and bbq sauce. Because it's so popular it's not uncommon to wait in line for 5 to 10 min to put your order in but you get your food immediately. The Mac and cheese is to die for! It's different but I highly recommend.

Good brisket sandwich. Big. Bring your appetite. Jalapeño Mac n Cheese is really good. Homemade. Thought about getting seconds on it. Plenty of sauces on the table to choose from and I really liked the mustard sauce. I liked how it seemed to enhance the smoke flavor of the brisket. The Texas Red is also good , so give it a try too. Definitely coming back. Also a plus that they are open on Sundays. Sometimes I just want bbq on Sundays and it can be hard to find a joint that is open. Moonie's is open and they are good. Go and eat. You will like it.

I read about this place Friday. Decided to try it. The brisket was so tender and melt in your mouth wonderful. Creamed corn was also awesome and tender, needed pepper. Brunswick stew was more Texas than southern. Service was from counter with plastic utincils. Tea was great. Atmosphere was close to Texas style. Sauces were spicy and sc mustard were good. Highly recommend!

Brisket was excellent, tender, good smoke ring and great flavor. Brunswick stew was very good, good flavor, chunks of meat (brisket I think) and a nice consistency ( a little too much corn). Quick service so you can have a great lunch in a rush if needed. I'll be back to try the rest of the menu.

I saw so many incredible reviews, I expected to come in and love everything. Unfortunately, that just want the case. My daughter ordered a kids meal basket with a side of Mac and cheese. I had a $5 special (spicy brisket) with a side of beans and a drink. Our total was still $18. I didn't think this price was out of line when I thought I was about to chow down on mind blowing BBQ. Once we started eating, we quickly realized that despite the extremely close proximity to hone, we aren't likely to return. We'd rather drive up to the other end of Flowery Branch or into Sugar Hill to eat at the places we enjoy. The beans were the best part of the meal. The sweet tea (which I luckily tasted a sip of prior to filing the cup) tasted old and was starting to turn. The Mac and cheese was dry tasting but swimming in oil. The brisket was... Ok. Not even good. The meat on my daughter's sandwich was decent but unremarkable. Neither of us finished our meals, and both of us tossed the leftovers rather than bringing them home to suffer through tomorrow. And I wasted out one night out on food neither of us could even enjoy. Also, I don't trust places that don't show you to taste pelage sides before purchasing. I don't want to spend $3 on a side that is bland or unappealing. Hugely disappointed.

Visited Moonie's while visiting my mother-in-law. She is also a fan of barbecue so I trust her judgment on good barbecue places. This one is no exception. Moonie's portrays itself as a Texas Barbecue place and it is in so far as it is located in Georgia. That means that there are items on the menu that you'd not find on a typical Texas menu. Items such as Brunswick Stew (one of my favorites). As we walked in and up to the counter the gentleman was parting through a pork shoulder and the meat looked fantastic. However I was here for what I consider true Texas barbecue and I was in the mood for Brisket. He pulled out a fresh brisket and it was beautiful. It had a nice bark and when he cut into it you could see a nice smoke ring and how moist it was. I got the Brisket Plate with a side of Creamed Corn and Brunswick Stew. Of course I had to order a Lone Star Beer to wash it all down. The Brisket was very well cooked. The bark had a wonderful flavor and the meat stood out as being high quality. You can tell. If the meat isn't rich and flavorful all the way through then the barbecue place buys cheap meat. Here the meat was rich and delicious all the way through so you know that Moonie's is buying high quality meat. Unfortunately the side effect for me was that the meat was almost too rich. the Brisket Plate comes with 1/2 lb. of meat and honestly I could only eat half of what I had. It would have been nice to have a 1/4 lb. portion. Sides can be a bit controversial for a barbecue joint as the main drawl should be the meat. Some believe that the sides should be plain so as not to call attention away from the meat. I'm not one of those. If you are going to order it then it should be worth putting in your mouth. Here the sides were fantastic but still didn't take away from the food. The beef was so rich that it needed something to divert you from it before it overwhelmed you. The Creamed Corn was some of the best I've had and I loved Creamed Corn. The Brunswick Stew was also good but not as good as I've had. Honestly though everyone in the South has their own Brunswick Stew recipe so it is a hard side to have on the menu. This one was good and pretty basic. Bottom Line: Would I eat here again? Yes I would and in fact I may even head there for lunch today....

Strike that rewind it back. The best just got better. The best BBQ I have eaten in the area just got better. The 1st time I ate here it was good. The second it time it was WOW. Every piece of meat I put in my mouth was delicious, but the brisket was off the carts and even though it was good last time it was great this time. This time also had the cream corn for a side. Loved that as well. I could eat it by the cup full. Last but not least is that container of yellow goodness topped with a nilla cookie....or as some would call heaven....I mean banana pudding. I go to my own little happy place when I put this in my mouth. Needless to say I love this dessert. Can't wait till my next visit.

I have had lots of barbeque all over the country. It is how I judge a place. For the longest time, Rudy's in TX had the best bbq, specifically brisket, I have ever had. A little place called Moonies changed all of that. We finally discovered it right before moving out of GA, but it really is the best bbq I've had. Plus its a small mom and pop in the middle of nowhere. It is pure and authentic and just perfect. All of the bbq was incredible. the brisket was the best thing on their menu, but the pork was incredible as well. Check it out if you havent. Saucy, delicious, wonderful smoky perfection

Really good food, but this review is going to be unfair because I've recently enjoyed the best BBQ Texas has to offer. Moved from San Antonio 8 months ago - for those that haven't experienced it, there's no BBQ like Texas BBQ. The meat was decent. Brisket was ok for Texas, but better than anything around here. Sausage was excellent and sauce was good. Sides - I had brisket chili and baked beans Neither were great. Average at best. Baked beans were too sweet. Ranch style or charro beans would be better Atmosphere - really feels like a Texas BBQ joint and that's important. Authentic decor, casual feel, and nice smokey aroma. They have ice cold Shiner and Lone Star, but they don't have Shiner original, just Shiner Bock. Overall, it's good, and worth a stop. I'm probably being too critical and perhaps I had it on an off night. I'll still be back next time I have a brisket fix and if you haven't been and you don't hate America you should stop by too.

Oh my goodness! Having lived in Austin for 5 years I am always on the lookout for really good brisket. I now live in North Carolina and have a hard time finding good Texas BBQ. When I walked in this place, I felt like I was back in Texas. BBQ was amazing and the brisket is some of the best I've had. Sides are really good and the Jalapeño Cheddar sausage was awesome. Will be back!

Found this place while in town for a wedding. Mildly disappointed. I had the brisket basket, which came with a side, bread and choice of meat. The brisket was very dry. I had to douse it with sauce to make it edible. It seemed odd that it was so dry considering that they cut it to order right in front of you. For my side, I had the Mac n cheese and it was excellent. There were little bits of jalapeño so it gave it a nice kick. I also tried my BF's jalapeño spicy sausage, which was very tasty. It was cooked perfectly with that nice snap when you bite into a sausage, then you get the meaty, spicy, smokey goodness. I also tried my cousin's sweet tea, which I'm normally not a huge fan of, but there's was pretty solid.

Great service and even better bbq. We only got brisket and ribs to go. The smoked fkavor is out of this world and the beef is crumbly but not dry. The sauce is good. This Texas girl finally found authentic Texas Barbecue.

Man! Am I a moron or what for not getting in here sooner! I tried this place on a day with nothing to do(June 8) after more than one recommendation. I am a huge fan of brisket and sausage, as they are not always the best around my area, just because most places might lean towards ribs and pork, but it's ok. BRISKET; This is the best brisket I have ever had. Period. I got lucky because as soon as I arrived, a brisket was coming out of the smoker. So I was the first to partake. Watched the guy slice it up for me and everything. Unbelieveable. Never had brisket like this. Perfectly cooked, moist, melted right in your mouth. Amazing. SAUSAGE; was great. I was actually surprised at the first bite because it was beef, not pork. Oh, well, that's Texas for ya. Great pop form the casing and a little darker type flavor. Even still had the string on the link. SIDES; I got mac n' cheese and beans. Mac was really good, with white cheddar and a little green pepper in it. Nice combo with good flavor. The beans were actually average, as I always like mine a little thicker with traces of meat//bbq sauce in them, but it's a personal preference. On my return trip I got the slaw. It was made with vinegar, which is not my fave, but maybe that's Texas again. I always prefer mayo, and sometimes a little ranch in it. Ok, the real killer here is the Brunswick stew. It is amazing. Easily in my all time top five. Nothing needed to be added. Even had a little spice on the back end. If you love Brunswick stew, this is the place. Very friendly staff with 'brother' said a lot and warm atmosphere. That means good leadership and people who like to work there. Returning two days later! PORK; Really something. bark on it, pretty flavorful, and went perfectly with their Texas red sauce. It was a good fit, even though it really didn't need much. Also a good treat when placed on white bread with a spoonful of the slaw.

My favorite thing about Moonies would have to be the smoked turkey. I will try to get all of my holiday turkeys from them in the future! I use their catering at least twice a week because they are so easy to work with and the staff LOVES everything. Their Mac-n-Cheese is unlike any other I have had.

The atmosphere is great. The staff is nice and helpful. The food was amazing and the sides are to die for. The only thing I would say to people is to get here early. Dinner time they fill up quick.

This is a great example of Texas style BBQ. The beef brisket is done just right. It is so tender that you can cut it with a plastic fork. The sausage is good as well the casing is a lil tough but the meat inside is perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. As far as sides go I really enjoy their creamed corn. It goes great with the beef. I also had the Brunswick stew. While the stew was full of meat I found it to be a lil bland, once I added some of their BBQ sauce to the stew it was pretty damn good. If you happen to be up in the flowery branch area and are looking for BBQ Moonies is a definite must stop location.

I tried it but I just could not get into it. Meats are stored on a steam table which made them a bit watery. The chili was god awful and everyone in my family tried it and said it was the worst they had ever had. The sauces were not bad but the bbq was plain and lifeless at best.

Well bad story... I brought my mom and wife here and you know how they say BBQ so good makes you wanna slap yo mama ... Well she wasn't happy . With every bite of the moist tender amazingly flavorful brisket I began to slap her with every piece that graced my palette. In all honesty the food is amazing staff is awesome and side dishes complement the meats. Welcoming clean environment and a staff that educates the patrons on their favorite selections ... Love Moonies! We've sampled most everything over time and have never been disappointed. It's a go to for great BBQ! The owners are great and passionate about their business. Brisket, Creamed Corn & Baked Beans are our favorites. Oh, and don't forget the awesome BBQ sauces and pickles! Their catering is affordable and always a win. We also bought our Thanksgiving turkey from them and it was perfect! You can't lose with Moonies!

For openers, if you believe the best Barbecue is usually found in a place you wouldn't want to go to at night, and has just enough grease on the table to write your initials - then Moonies only scores on one of the two: You wouldn't want to go there at night because it's so far from most everywhere that it'd likely be several days and nights before oyu got there. OK, maybe a slight exaggeration. Having spent a lifetime in the pursuit of the prefect barbecue (see the Brown Shoe Gourmet's other reviews), I won't claim Moonie's Texas Barbecue is prefect - but it's awfully close. Too far from most anywhere, Moonie's is as close to anything I've enjoyed in Texas. And like most Texas joints, their brisket is the key. When you walk in you see signs saying, "Got brisket?" The same slogan is on the shirts the staff wears and that they sell, and I. as a collector of more than 200 t-shirts from barbecue places across the country, appreciate.. We had the brisket basket: a stacked high sandwich (choice of bread's but why would anyone ask for anything other than thin white sandwich bread if they're having barbecue??) and one side for $8.45. Simply put, Moonie's Texas Barbecue brisket is as good as you'll find in all metro Atlanta and a lot better than most. Moist, full flavor complete with char. To borrow a phrase from the chicken guy, it's "finger lickin' good." We also got a pulled pork and rib combo with two sides, so that between us we had their top three selling sides: the creamy corn, baked beans and the potato salad. The creamy corn, made fresh daily, was beyond just very good. The baked beans with small chunks of apple was very good and the potato salad, like the kids living in Lake Woebegone, are above average. The sides, come in larger than you probably expected servings and can easily be shared. They have three sauces: what they call their Texas Red, the favorite at our table, the Spicy (a hint of jalapeno) and a Carolina's mustard. And if you find one you like, you can buy some to take home along with gallon jars of pickle slices and jalapenos. Their pulled pork was as moist as the brisket and just short of being as full flavored. The ribs, slow cooked over oak, were good although the tip of the small end we got was dry. Moonie's has a bar where you can load up on as much and as many pickles, onions, jalapenos as you want. You get a large bright red plastic cup for tthe soda/rea bar which also reads "got brisket?" and reminds you (on the other side of the glass) where you got it every time you use it at home. Their menu says they also have turkey, chicken and sausage but I'm not sure we'd give any of those items a shot when we have a couple days off to drive that far north of civilization. After all, they've "got brisket." Turns out there really is a Moonie, a stuble bearded geek type who grew up in Texas and abandoned the world of plastic pocket protectors to start this Texas themed restaurant almost within waking distance of his home. My hunch is that most of the family spends time on the business side of the counter serving the Tuesday through Sunday crowd and preparing for the day when they open for breakfast. Moonie says the Good Lord will tell him if he wants him to open a second location. I'd rather he listen to the Brown Shoe Gourmet, listen to a good real estate agent and give some other folks not willing to make the long drive, a chance to enjoy some really great Texas barbecue. One final word. Actually two: Banana pudding. One is more than enough for two after a full meal, but not to be missed even when you think you're too full for another spoon of anything. It is to deserts what Moonie's brisket is to meats. Put 'em on your list... they're worth finding.

Sitting here right now after eating what may have been the most lackluster BBQ we've ever had. How does this place have 4.5 stars??? The brisket was dry and almost cold. The sausage was just flat out weird. Squishy with the texture of a very soft meatloaf , that seriously had us wondering what kind of filler was in it- maybe sawdust? If you want great BBQ go to Shane's BBQ - Yes, the chain. Much better than this. Maybe they had 80 friends that faked the reviews. Trust us.. if you know good BBQ you don't want this.

I guess if I had any suggestions is to get some bread- Texas Toast- and something green ( turnip greens, green beans, something home cooked they can do...) but at the end of the day, you can' t go wrong with any choice of beef, pork, chicken.... This is a great little find for Flowery Branch. I stop at least once a month now. Love it!!!

I was super stoked to see all the great reviews & stopped by on my way to the lake. I didn't have a good experience. The brisket & pork were dry & bland. The sauces available were disappointing. The sides were lacking in flavor. More than anything, the servers were grumpy. I stood for 5 min waiting on ketchup. Maybe it was a bad day, but no one in my group had a good meal. I wish we had stopped at Firehouse instead.

I've been looking for a good bbq place around atlanta for a long time and we found Moonie's. The bbq is excellent. You immediately know you've found true bbq when you get there and they are smoking their meats and you can smell it. Its also very clean. We tried the sliced beef and pulled pork the first day. The beef was ok but not my thing. The pulled pork was amazing and the service excellent! We haven't tried the chicken yet but will in the future. Their banana pudding is also excellent and a must try if you go there!

Anyone who give this place less than 4 stars is crazy! #1 I haven't had BBQ this good in a such a long time! We were starving on our way home from a 2 hour hike at Tallulah Falls Trail and found Moonie's Texas BBQ on Yelp. The reviews were consistently good, minus a few outliers, so we decided to stop. The restaurant wasn't crowded, but it was also a Sunday around 3. We both had the pulled pork, OMG SO JUICY! It didn't even need any sauce...of course we tried all 3 sauces. :) We shared a side of baked beans - also very good. The BBQ was fantastic, service was good and we were full - what more can you ask for?!

WOW! Was in Flowery Branch for an afternoon. We had forgotten to eat lunch so we started searching for a place close by. Using Yelp, I found that we were within a mile of a BBQ place. We like BBQ so why not. Best decision we have made in a while! Hubby got the brisket plate and I got the ribs. Sides were potato salad, mac and cheese, brisket chili, and cream corn. It was so good. Everything. The ribs and brisket was the best we have ever had. And the sides all stood up to any I have had in the past. Service was friendly and the restaurant was very clean. Do yourself a big favor (flavor) and get to Moonie's. Go hungry, and leave very happy!

Best bbq I've had in Georgia so far! Had the pulled pork with beans and coleslaw. You order and pay at the counter and then they have some bbq sauces at the tables. The meat is served on butcher paper lined trays and the sides in styrofoam containers. I loved it. We will definitely return!

Some of the best cuts of smoked meat you're going to find (in a part of Georgia that prides itself on its smoked meats)! The brisket and pulled pork are top notch. The sides are all pretty average and slightly pricey compared to other local barbecue joints, but you won't need many -- the portions of meat are very generous. Love the hot sauce rack featuring dozens of exotic sauces. Not crazy about the barbecue sauce selections, though. They taste a little too much like store-bought sauces, which is a bummer because the cuts of meat are all five stars.

My husband and I paid a visit to Moonie's this past weekend to check the place out after reading all of these great reviews. It's a bit off the beaten path in Flowery Branch making it a nice place to come upon while driving through the older part of the city. The restaurant building itself looks relatively new and the inside was clean and had a lot of decorative touches that really made it unique. We stood at the counter to order and then found a little booth to wait for our food. As we waited, we both were eyeing the BBQ sauce flavors with anticipation... the Carolina Mustard based BBQ Sauce ended up being my favorite. When our order arrived I was very pleased I had a BBQ pulled pork sandwich on a bun with baked beans and Bobby got the brisket sandwich and Brunswick stew. I started with the baked beans and noticed there was something that looked like onions in them. I said to Bobby "now surely they wouldn't ruin perfectly good baked beans with onions" being a self proclaimed onion hater, I slowly got up the nerve to try a bite and they ended up to my pure delight being apples! I love apples! The fact that Moonie's puts apples into their baked beans means that I will be a customer for life. I will also from now on always cook my baked beans with apples :) In all my shock over the beans, I nearly forgot the reason we came here in the first place....the BBQ. The pork was fresh, tender and delicious and the Carolina Mustard sauce I smothered my sandwich with was to die for. This place is truly a gem and something you definitely don't want to miss out on!

Great, very smokey barbecue, definitely worth a drive out of town. Moonie's is the most authentically Texas experience I've found around Atlanta. First thing you'll notice when your walk in the door is a delightful background smell of wood smoke. The next thing I noticed was the ice filled tub with Shiner Bock and Lone Star beer. Authentic. The folks behind the counter were friendly and helpful. In Texas, the barbecue tradition stems from old general stores, so it's common for meat to be sold by weight, cut to order, and served on butcher paper. That's how Moonie's does it. I came to try the brisket. They were, unfortunately, out of ribs, so the wife got pulled pork. We got potato salad, mac salad and beans as sides. The brisket was the best I've had in Georgia. I was very pleased. Most places aren't patient enough to let the brisket smoke long enough for the smoke flavor to be evident over the beefiness of brisket. I was pleased to see that the brisket Moonie's pulled out to slice looked like something shot out of a volcano, black and shiny. It could maybe have used a tad more seasoning and was just slightly dry. But it was nearly two o'clock when I arrived, so I'd guess it may have been holding for a little while. But those are nitpicks, overall really great brisket. The pulled pork was also fabulous. However, I like to really taste the smoke in my 'cue. A barbecue judge would deduct points from Moonie's pork and say it has "ashtray" flavors. I personally liked it alot, if you're not a big fan of powerful smoke flavor, avoid the outside barky pieces (my wife gave them to me). The mac and potato salads were fairly plain. Pretty much pasta and potatoes, respectively, in mayo with a few seasonings, acceptable, but not exceptional. The beans however were some of the best I've ever had. I kept getting pieces of something slightly crunchy. At first I thought it was onion, but upon closer inspection, I realized it was apples. I believe the secret to their beans is apple pie filling mixed in. That may not sound good, but the spices and sweetness of the apples marry perfectly with the beans. I'll be back for sure.

Husband and I are BBQ lovers and we are so thrilled to have Moonie's nearby. This place is the real deal with delicious, buttery brisket, excellent chopped pork, smoky, yummy ribs and some pretty darned good sausage as well. You go to a BBQ place for the meat and the meat is top quality at Moonie's. They know how to cook it and how to cut it to make sure that you get the kind of BBQ that you like best. I prefer a dry brisket and the guys at Moonie's always make sure I get the nice, leaner stuff with lots of crisp bark. The sides are also worth noting, especially the creamed corn. This stuff is absolutely addictive, along with their excellent slaw, it makes the perfect complement to the brisket or pork. I'm not a Brunswick stew fan, but my husband is and he loves Moonie's. In fact he orders a plate I like to call the Kevin special, Pork or brisket with a side of brisket chili and a side of Brunswick stew. The boy in a serious carnivore. The folks at Moonie's are nice and the owners are super nice. Don't miss out on the best BBQ in Georgia, this place is worth a drive if you're not in the area. Oh, and don't forget to try the pudding, both the chocolate and banana are yummy, but the chocolate is thick and rich, almost more like a mousse. It also features an oreo crust! YUM!

I read about Moonie's in Atlanta's Top 10 BBQ restaurants issue. I was in town for a family visit and Flowery Branch is the next town over. We got a group together and drove on over for lunch. The smell outside is this amazing smokey smell, and be prepared, because it is going to stick with you for the rest of the day. They have a very simple menu of Pork, Brisket, Turkey, Chicken and Sausage. It's all very good. The sides were excellent as well. The beans and cream corn were delicious. I had some of their brisket and they serve it with 3 different sauces. I tried both the sweet and the spicy and both were very good. My family was definitely going to go back again. They also have a very cool basin full of Texas beer (Shiner and Lone Star) as well as bottled soda like IBC and Fanta.

I'm originally from NW Arkansas and though Arkansas isn't known specifically for their barbecue, but being in between Kansas City, Memphis and Texas I've always felt that growing up in that area was great for a barbecue lover. I moved to the Atlanta area in 2012 and though I've had decent barbecue nothing has ever stood out to me. I live in Buford and was always looking for restaurants south of my house and one day read about Moonie's. Drove up with a friend and was absolutely blown away. We had Moonie's cater in a luncheon at work recently, and all the guys raved about the food. I've had many requests about when we can have another catered meal by Moonie's. I think it has probably been the favorite out of any of the food we have brought in for the employees in the 4 years that I've been at this facility. Not a single complaint about anything, which is a feat in and of itself. There's always at least one complaint from someone about whatever we've brought in for the employees, so to have this meal get zero complaints is a huge accomplishment. Personally, I'm not a meat eater - so I did not partake in the food. But I can still appreciate good service and am happy to pass on the satisfaction of the guys who thoroughly enjoyed this spread.

Texas-style que like I remember. Brisket that falls apart, turkey smoked to perfection. Haven't made it early enough to try the ribs. Awesome homemade sides. Went to two other BBQ joints in three different states the same week, including world-famous Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, AL (which is one of my favorites), and Moonie's was the best, hands-down. There are a lot of BBQ places that SAY they do Texas style brisket. There is quite a bit of good brisket, but this, ladies and gents is the REAL DEAL! I lived in Ft Worth, TX for 6 years and this is what is supposed to look like, smell like and taste like. I like the pig generally better, but when it's done right, this stuff is awesome. Texans call what these guys do right "the brick" is the black beautiful crust on the outside of the brisket. It also has a really nice smoke ring (about 1/8"). What does that mean? It means it sat on that smoker FOREVER! They don't have metal silverware? Why? THEY DON'T NEED IT! Plastic forks roll right through this stuff Nice peppery sauce. I had the beans and creamed corn. Beans have baked apples and a bit of a mustardy flavor (to me), really really good. Creamed Corn....you can tell it's home made it really good as well. It would've been perfect if the tea was a little stronger (more tea taste) and they had Texas Toast. White Bread....I know it's classic, but meh. I got a pound to take home because I live about 40 miles from the place. The sides are also really big. Twice what you get in town. I really want to give these guys a five star....we'll just say, I give it a 4.75.

We went to Flowery Branch to go the antique market they have once a month and decided to try this BBQ restaurant across the street. Boy were we glad we did. I had the turkey sandwich and my husband had the brisket sandwich, they were both melt in your mouth tender and had a wonderful flavor. We also had the baked beans which had apple pie filling which sounds strange but was so yummy.I wish they were not 45 minutes away so I could go there more often.

My dad and I made it out to Moonie's for the first time today. We had brisket and jalapeño sausage with Brunswick stew and coleslaw for sides. The meat was cooked perfectly. The brisket had plenty of marbling and was insanely tender. The only thing that could have improved upon the brisket was if they had added a little more seasoning when cooking. Without any sauce, it was just a little bland. However, the sausage definitely held it's own and was extremely flavorful sans sauce. Each of the 3 sauces we tried (regular, spicy, and mustard) were all very tasty as well. I have been to quite a few BBQ joints across Texas, and Moonie's definitely does it up right. Everything is served on wax paper, there's ice cold bottles of Shiner Bock (literally, it's sitting in a tub of ice next to the counter), and they provide the essential pickles, jalapeños, onions, and bread. On top of everything, the owner was extremely cool, and was extremely accommodating. We had my dog in tow, and even though they don't officially have any outdoor seating yet (there's a few tables about 50ft. from the restaurant, but they will have a patio soon), he made sure we had everything we needed to eat outside with the pup. This was definitely some of the best BBQ I've had in the area and I will certainly be back.

Best BBQ in Atlanta. It might not be comparable, because it's "Texas" barbeque and it's not in Atlanta, but I still say it's the best. I've had them all- Community Q, Fox Bros, DBA, you name it, I've had it. Moonies is the most succulent, life changing, incredible brisket you'll get anywhere. Definitely worth the drive from anywhere in the vague-ish Metro area.

We went out of our way to stop in on a Sunday afternoon after seeing the fairly high Yelp rating. Very disappointing to say the least. The bark on the BBQ wasn't very good - too harsh. Its one of the first things I look at and taste. The sides of slaw and beans weren't very good either. Lastly, I found the place to be dirty. I won't be going back. I suspect their high rating is a direct result of local patronage in a fairly remote spot.

Overall, Moonie's did not live up to the hype. I ordered the pulled pork plate, with beef brisket chili, potato salad, and wheat bread as my sides. The Good: The portion size is very generous. It's rare that I struggle to clean my plate anywhere, but Moonie's accomplished that feat. They also gave me free sour cream and cheese to go with my chili. All three of their bbq sauces are excellent. The beef in the chili was tender. I also liked that they have complimentary pickles and jalapeno peppers that you can add to your food or have on the side. The not so good: The pork did not have the best flavor to it. The potato salad was very basic and could have used some spices and bacon added to it. The brisket chili was also a little bland, although the meat was tender as it should have been. I would have also preferred to have something like Texas toast or cornbread over plain pieces of white bread, wheat bread, or a bun. I would be willing to give it another try, but since I live an hour away I probably won't be going back. My gut feeling is that brisket is probably the only thing worth ordering from here. Smokejack and Spiced Right are still the two best places in the Atlanta area for bbq, in my opinion.

Darn good BBQ and their claim to fame is the Brisket for which I found to be just right in its texture, moisture content, and smoky flavor; something that many Georgia BBQ establishments miss! The pulled pork was pretty darn good as well with no offending pork matter, but I will admit that I liked the Brisket better! The two sides I chose where very fresh and nicely complimented the meats: Potato salad was definitely home made and of the Mayo base with very chunky potatoes and a bit much dill for my taste, but not bad at all: BBQ Beans where their own doctored concoction of the common variety but had a very nice smoky taste to them. Sauces are on the table and consist of a Mustard Base and a Tomato Base. I was not fond of the Mustard base sauce but really enjoyed the Tomato base one; it worked really well with the Brisket and Pork! Of course, I had to finish off the meal with some homemade Banana Puddin that again was actually homemade; it was very light and not of the standard heavy pudding; filled with very fresh bananas and just the right amount of niller waffers; good stuff! Moonies is a welcome addition to the Flowery Branch area and hopefully they will thrive in their location. The owner is a Texan who knows his Brisket and if he doesn't measure up, he will be called back to Texas and hogtied!

Drove by Moonies on Saturday and decided to give them a try. When I walked in I was immediately overcome by the delicious smoky aromas. The decor inside screamed all that is TEXAS. All of the stars on the walls made me long for some smoked beef brisket! I ordered 1/2lb of brisket and a jalapeno sausage. I was blown away by the brisket! Both of the sauces on the table were fantastic. This is the best bbq I have tasted in Georgia. I cleaned my tray and was going to order more to bring home, but the line to order was starting to thicken and I had places to go. I am however going to come back next weekend and order a pound of brisket and some sauce to keep at the house.

Have eaten at Moonie's at least 6-8 times. It is always consistently "good" but not excellent. The brisket is sometimes absolutely wonderful and other times has too much fat and a bit over-smoked. But the side items are always delicious, and all are homemade. Particular favorites are the creamed corn and baked beans. Never had apples in baked beans but they really work well.

I was told about Moonie's right when it opened. It at first was only open I believe 2 days a week and basically the owner did BBQ as a passionate hobby. He now has gone full steam. Since day one it has been the best BBQ I have ever had. I watch the BBQ Pit Masters show often. The night before I went to Moonie's I watched a episode that told you how to tell if a brisket is good by how it bends. I saw the owner pull a new brisket out of the smoker at Moonie's and it did the bend as in the show. I right there ordered 1 pound instead of the pulled pork. It is to die for. Basically you order meat by the pound. You get it served on paper, and you get unlimited bread, and pickles to go with your meat. I tried the pulled pork last time I went also and it is very good and tender also. It's a Texas BBQ so it is something different than the same old same old just pulled pork places around. If I could I would eat here every week.

Moonies has great BBQ. I had the pulled pork and my husband had the brisket. Everything was great. It wasn't busy when we got there, so we were able to order and get a table before the rush. I've never really been a fan of barbecue, most of what I've had has been adequate at best. Moonie's is in a class of its own. I like the brisket, the turkey and the pork. The sausage is a little too spicy for my tastes. The sides are amazing too. I love the baked beans and the creamed corn is just incredible. We live about half a mile from Moonie's and had no idea it was there until reading reviews on Yelp. Now we get takeout at least every couple of weeks!

Didn't try the brisket that other reviewers mention. Had a pulled pork sandwich and Brunswick stew. It was okay, a little pricey and not quite what I was expecting. Worth giving a shot. Not my kind of BBQ, but might be just what you're looking for...

I know the difference between good and bad BBQ. I am so happy that we have Moonies in our area because their food taste and quality is excellent. Clearly the owner/cook is very passionate about the food he serves and wants to get it just right.

We were told by some friends who live in Flowery Branch to give this place a try...boy I am glad we did. My wife and I both had the brisket basket. One had beans and the other cole slaw. The brisket had a great bark and mild smokey flavor. It was very tasty. Both of the sides were good as well. I talked to other patrons and most were returning customers which says a lot in my book...and btw we will be returning also...

We had seen the signs for this great little place and stopped in today for the first time. The brisket is the best I have ever had! We just had to sample some in the car before we got home! Will go back everytime we go sailing for this bit of heaven!

Absolutely the best smoked turkey and baked beans I've ever had! We tell everyone we know to go here. Loved the Jalapeno Sausage and Beef Brisket too. Haven't tried the Pork but hubby says it's not as good as everything else. Excellent chocolate pudding and creamed corn. They changed the potato salad recently and we didn't like it nearly as well as the recipe they used when they first opened up. The cole slaw is so-so. Ask for a bun if you want it, otherwise you get sliced white bread. The manager really cares about his product and welcomes feedback.

Wow! their food is slamming good. Went to a big party that had Moonie's supply the food. Hands down some of the best pulled pork and bisket BBQ that I have every tasted. The cole slaw was very fresh, best baked beans ever and potatoe salad to rivel any homemade by a Grandmother. Have to say I was surprised just how darn good everything was!

We got a kids meal and a lunch pork sandwich with Brisket stew. Our total was almost $17 WITHOUT drinks. FIRST of all, BBQ does not come out of an oven, and that is how this meat is produced. Secondly, the open kitchen is EXTREMELY dirty as viewed from the ordering station. There was no smoke ring on the meats. The meats were under spiced, dry and lacked flavor. Even a six year old would not eat the baked beans, they add canned apple pie filling to the beans. I am sorry, cinnamon, apples, and corn syrup do not belong in beans. The "brisket stew" was bland, and seemed to be brisket with diced tomatoes and devoid of any seasoning or flavor. The sandwiches were on the small size, and the buns cold and somewhat stale. I TRULY felt ripped off when I left. If I had paid $10 for our lunch, I still would have been terribly disappointed by the quality. I don't get the high ratings here on yelp, are you so desperate for brisket that you are willing to accept sub-par food? Why pay ballpark prices for poorly prepared recipes and meats?

Very good BBQ.... if your out on Lake Lanier you should certainly stop by and try it out....it will be packed.... might even be worth the drive from Atlanta just for the BBQ.

I lived in Aggieland for three years, and I know great Texas barbeque when I see it. I had high hopes for this place, based on the reviews. This area has a dearth of real barbeque available - other than the surprising good days at Shane's and Sonny's. Unfortunately, I'm afraid my expectations were just a bit too high. The proprietor/armed guard who was serving the meat was friendly and the restaurant was clean and busy. I ordered brisket by the pound with standard sides for takeout. The brisket I received was more from the greasy/fatty piecemeal part of the cut, as opposed to the nice firm slices that are often sought out. There was some smoke flavor, but it was underwhelming. If there was a dry rub used, it wasn't evident to me, as there was almost no extra flavor other than the beef. You would want to season your brisket here, and that is not usually a desirable thing to have to do. The meat was overwhelmingly greasy and drippy. Not the nice moist yet dry cut that many Texans prefer and make so well. The side choices are pretty standard. We opted for the large Brunswick stew. It too was overly greasy - definitely not good for stew, and rather flavorless. All-in-all it might have been an off day for them. I would be willing to give them another chance. Oh, if the sight of your order-taker and meat-server wearing a loaded handgun on his belt (for absolutely no apparent reason) is not disturbing, then this place may definitely be for you.

WOW! This is the best BBQ. If you live in ATL you have to take a road trip to FLOWERY BRANCH. The brisket melts in your mouth. The pork is tender. The ribs also tender and full of flavor.

Wow, these guys are doing it right! The Brisket was nice and smokey, yet tender and moist. As the meat was being sliced I could see the juices pouring out and I knew that this must be good. I was rewarded a few minutes later with a very moist brisket sandwich and some good BBQ sauce. The tomato based sauce was good stuff! It's hard to find good brisket around here but Moonies makes AWESOME brisket. By far the closest thing to Lockhart, TX that I have found. Thanks for serving up awesome grub and I look forward to eating there once a week....at least!!

We tried a little bit of everything on the menu and we loved every bite! The brisket is definitely my favorite, but the pulled pork and ribs are also fantastic. Everything is homemade, down to the banana pudding! Best BBQ in town!

After reading Atlanta Magazines listing of best of barbques in area. we went on a mission to sample all of them over a period of about 3 weeks. I am here to tell you as a true barbecue head who's eaten at the best the US has to offer , Moonies is hands down the best I have had in Atlanta period. If non affecianados start talking to me about the sauce or the sides, I know immediately they are not reall barbeque people. Moonies' brisket is the best I have had anywhere outside of central Texas. Their pulled pork beats anything I have had in the entire Southeast, their Pork Ribs are superb, their half chicken is great, and their sausage beats all except central Texas. Two thumbs up for this one and well worth the drive.

Ok, this place has now moved ahead of the bar b que pack. I thought that I would wait and see if it changed in quality or service over time before rating this establishment. I am pleased to announce that when a place is the best, they have no room for improvement. There are many good BBQ restaurants to choose from in the metro Atlanta area, but Moonie's is in a different class than most of the others. Moonie's serves what I call an artistic, connoisseur quality of BBQ. The only other restaurant that I have personally tried to compare, is Heirloom Barbecue in Atlanta. The owner of Moonie's takes careful pride in the preparation of his meats. The pure nirvanic reaction to eating the brisket can only be experienced when it is cooked like it is loved. The brisket has a perfect bark and is moist and flavorful. As I watched the owner carve my half pound serving of brisket, I could sense his love for the process and what he was doing. When someone really loves what they are doing, that is when art is created. Moonie's brisket is more than just barbecue. It is culinary art.

Food is Great! Brisket lip smacking good! Smoked Turkey is the BOMB! This place is a true Texas Style BBQ (not just another BBQ place) where your meal is served on butcher paper. Sides are great! My favorite is the corn, but I like to add a few of the free jalapeno to give it a kick! Atmosphere is great and looking forward to his promise of unveiling more sauce options (mustard/vinegar based). If you like Banana Pudding, your in for a treat!

Finally got in on third try! Food was great! I had the brisket and my wife had the turkey - melt in your mouth good! The brisket had virtually no fat and was cooked to perfection. We both had a side of slaw to complement the meal and that was great too - not a lot of sugar. We topped it off with Lone Star beer for a great meal. Will go back there again and again!

This cute little BBQ joint serves up the best BBQ I have ever had. The meat is fork-tender and the homemade beans and slaw are fabulous... So good that we recently picked up some baked beans & slaw for company instead of making our own ... and I didn't leave without a pound of Texas beef brisket either. The place is small with a small parking lot, but don't let that fool you. They do serve beer and soft drinks and brewed tea. We've recently been planning to drive all over Atlanta in search of the best BBQ around, but that won't be necessary ... it's less than a mile away.

Great simple barbecue. The brisket is great, it has a nice bark to it and is very tender. I for one was happy to see a BBQ joint go back to the roots and offer the meat on a tray by the weight. They don't try to be anything fancy or a new twist on BBQ. Very traditional and they hit a home run. The brisket really is phenomenal.
